Balsam Lake & Graham Mountains – 10/18/14

The Crew took a nice Fall hike up Balsam Lake and Graham Mountains. We where fortunate enough to see a mature bald eagle fishing in the stream. The day started of cloudy with intermittent showers. When we got to the top of Graham the rain picked up for a bit, but the wind was blowing and the rain shortly past. After eating lunch we hike over to Balsam Lake and checked out the mini museum in the ranger cabin and got to check the views from the fire tower. All in all another great day. Low’s Lake Canoe & Fishing Trek – 07/27/14

For this summer’s outing, the crew decided to do a five day canoe trek at Low’s Lake in the Adirondacks. We drove up in heavy rain, which cleared by the time we arrived at Sabattis. Upon arrival, we did our swim test and had our canoeing skill evaluated. We proceed to the Trek center and set up our tents for the night and checked out our gear for the trek. After the BBQ dinner we attended the opening campfire ceremony. Monday morning we awoke to a steady rain which lasted the whole day. We portaged all our gear and canoes from the Trek Center to the waterfront, loaded up the...

Cornell/Wittenberg Mountains and Camp out

Camporee Scramble Weekend The Crew was planning to attending the council camporee at Mohonk Mountain this weekend, but unfortunately the camporee was cancelled at the last minute. Not wanting to miss an opportunity to get outdoors, we scrambled to come up with another plan. After a short discussion the pln was to hike Cornell and Wittenberg Mountains and then camp out at the Sidney Clapp camp. It was a beautiful day for a hike and there where many people out hiking. It was a little muddy in areas, and even experienced patches of snow and ice near the top. We did have a hail shower on the way...

Hunter & Southwest Hunter Mountains – 11/16/13

A beautiful late season Fall day and another 2 peaks completed. We started at the Devil’s Tombstone campground and followed the trail to the saddle between the two peaks. The initial climb was quite steep, but the trail had many switchbacks which made it not as tough as some of the recent trail-less peaks we have climbed. The more hikes we do, the more conditioned we become. From the saddle, we continued up Hunter Mountain, which is the second highest peak of the Catskills at 4040 feet. Once on top we ate lunch and checked out the view from the fire tower. On the way back, we to a side...

Backpacking trip – Hemlock, Spruce & Fir Mountains

We couldn’t have asked for a nicer weekend for a backpack trip. We left Saturday morning from the Slide Mountain parking area and bushwacked our way to the peak of Hemlock Mountain. It was quite a steep climb and carrying full packs made it quite the challenge. It was a slow climb as we weaved through the underbrush and rock formations. Once to the top, we found a good spot to set up our tents and hammocks as well as prepared a spot for our fire. The rest of the afternoon was spent relaxing and enjoying the great day. Clouds rolled in in the evening, so the stars and moon were not...
