Neversink Backpacking Trip – 06/28/13

Instead of going to a traditional Boy Scout camp this summer, our troop decided to stay local and do a trip that we often hear the oldtimers reminisce about doing when they were a scout. So often we find ourselves travelling great distances to “get away” when we have some of the greatest areas right in our back yard. This is the kind of camping scouting is all about. Just you, nature, and whatever you can carry on your back. Not car camping that has become the norm in scouting these days. This site does not support embedded trip maps. View the trip here instead. We started out on...

“Bushwack Range” Camping Trip – Planned

This summer, the troop is planning to climb 4 trail-less peaks of the Catskill 3500: Friday, Balsam Cap, Rocky and Lone mountains. This will be accomplished over 3 days and 2 nights. The first ~1.5 miles will be on a maintained trail, and the remainder on a non-maintained “fisherman’s path” that is rumored to be an easy route. The purpose of picking this location is the...

Slide Mountain – 03/16/13

The weather was finally on our side. The previous month’s hike had to be cancelled due to a snow storm preventing us from even getting to the mountain. It was a great day for a winter hike and there where a lot of people taking advantage of it. We arrived about the same time as the folks from the Triple Cities Hiking Club and hiked to the peak with them. We had some good “scouting” discussions with Larry, who is a hiking merit badge councilor. When we arrived at the summit, there was a good view of the Ashokan reservoir, but by the time we finished eating lunch, the snow...

Big Indian Mountain – 09/17/12

What a better way to use a day of from school than going on a troop hike. Lucked out on the weather and enjoyed having the parents join us. Just a great peaceful day. Didn’t see a single person on the trail.     All Catskill 3500...
